HDMI TO AV CONVERTER OR AV TO HDMI CONVERTER, WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Posted by Lakesen Guo on

For a technical person like me, I simply believe that the names ( or titles) of these two devices are reflecting their function very clearly, but it is my fault, many our customers purchased a wrong one and need a replacement in the past a few years.  There seems to be some confusion for people with understanding which of these devices they need for the application they are setting up.

In this blog I will use in Donald Trump’s word to describe these two devices for the consumers who have no any technical background.

What does AV mean in here?

AV is an abbreviation for audio/video. It has become a generic term used in home entertainment setups and products and is usually connected through some sort of RCA cable. The typical three-jack AV ( RCA jack) setup on most entertainment equipment includes a yellow sleeve for video, a red sleeve for the right audio channel, and a white sleeve for the left audio channel of stereo audio. These connect to the corresponding male jacks of the cable. RCA cables were created by the Radio Corporation of America in the 1940s, hence the name RCA.

There are many types of AV cable, but most are either component AV cables or composite AV cables. The composite AV cable is the classic RCA cable mentioned above.  So the term AV means the composite AV or RCA in here.

Who Needs a HDMI to AV converter?

  • If you have an older television or projector in the home, office, or classroom that still works well but does have RCA input port only. And
  • you have some media hardware released in just the past few years, such as Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, Apple TV, and Sky WDTV consoles but does have HDMI output only.
  • The HDMI to AV converter is yours.

It convert the HDMI signals to traditional RCA signals and help the images you see on that old television’s screen look better than ever also. It enhances the brightness and contrast of the images it processes. It can easily be changed from PAL to NTSC at the flick of a switch.

Who need an AV to HDMI converter?

  • If you have an older camcorders, an older VHS player and many other classic systems such as Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis but does not have the HDMI output port and
  • If you want to display it on newer, high-definition televisions which does have the HDMI input port only
  • The AV to HDMI Converter is yours

The converter will decode the AV signal to its original bits, and then re-route it to the HDMI port to be used. It is important to note that the image will only be as good as the device capabilities. For instance, a 720p video recorder will not produce 1080p results on a newer TV by using a converter, but it will deliver the best quality possible.
