What is the main different in video between HDMI 1.3 , 1.4 and 2.0?

Posted by Lakesen Guo on

Many clients asked what the HDMI v1.3 v1.4 or v2.0 version compatible device means? Which one is better for my TV?

Actually the HDMI standard is a serious specification for Video/Audio. For generic users it is too complex, but if you know few specifications then you can purchase a correct device.

In here we just focus on video (resolution and refresh rate) only.

1.  HDMI 1.3   Video support up to 1080P (1920 × 1080 at 120 Hz or 2560 × 1440 at 60 Hz)

2.  HDMI 1.4 Video support up to 4Kx2K@30HZ (4096×2160 at 24 Hz, 3840×2160 (Ultra HD) at 24 Hz/25 Hz/30 Hz, and support for 1080p at 120 Hz)

3.  HDMI 2.0 Video support up to 4Kx2K@60Hz  (3840 × 2160 (Ultra HD)) at 60Hz

For the refresh rate, generally 30Hz is perfect for watching films, but gaming and some video streaming could make great use of 60Hz.

Note:  "Ultra High Definition" is actually a derivation of the 4K digital cinema standard. However some devices can not show images in native 4096 x 2160 4K resolution, instead of a slightly lower resolution of 3840 X 2160, it is called Ultra HD (UHD) consumer format also.

This is one reason why some brands prefer not to use the 4K label at all, sticking with Ultra HD or UHD instead.
